Love is Kind. Love is Not Selfish

Last week we talked about how patience is a choice to react and respond positively. This week we will think about kindness as a choice; a choice to do BE kind. Kindness is an action. The keys to kindness are choosing to be kind, willingness to put other before ourselves and taking initiative. Take the initiative to say and do kind things, be willing to serve and meet needs without worrying about ourselves and our rights.

Mrs. Proverbs 31 had it down! Every time do you think? Probably not, but but she won the battle (and it is a battle!) more often than not because she was known for her kindness.

We are all sinful by nature and therefore we are selfish. Society is filled with Me-ology. We hear about our needs, our desires, our rights. We think that we “deserve” this and that. We need to trust God with our own needs rather than seeking to meet them ourselves. Then we are free to focus on others. Pastor Walsh preached a message on love last month at church. He said that loving God with all your heart will not come naturally and that you need to practice and persevere. Kindness and unselfishness are things that we need to practice too. Our first attempts may be fumbling but as we exercise them, they will begin to come more naturally.
Another thing mom and I were talking about (other than biting your tongue) was motive. We need to make sure we are motive is love for God and not personal glory and bragging rights.

Challenge #2 Do something unexpected for your spouse. Something kind.
Challenge #3 What you put your time, energy and money into will become more important to you. Invest one of these in your spouse today.

You can follow along here, however I really recommend picking up a copy of The Love Dare for yourself. It contains so much more than what I am sharing here. You can purchase one by clicking the appropriate flag on my right sidebar to go to my A-Store.
Do you have a tune-up you are working on? Are you joining me in the Double Love Dare? How are you doing? Leave a comment to let us know or add a direct link to your blog post below to encourage and inspire others. Don’t underestimate the power of accountability – it’s a great motivator!

Having cleaned up my kitchen, and with my littles still down, I thought I would sit down and catch you up on some Tune-Up Tuesday progress!

For those who are not familiar with Tune Up Tuesday please start here.

Tune Up Tuesday is my day to share with you the tiny little step that I am taking each week to become more Christ-like. Some weeks my tiny little step is more spiritual than others but each challenge that I complete makes me more like the woman He wants me to be. (Tuesdays are also your opportunity to share if you want!)
  • Focusing on eating my meals, I have more energy to get through my day accomplishing the things He has for me. I am healthier. And I am losing weight!! Slowly, but that baby weight is coming off. Hurray!
  • My desk is a sore point. Though it is more organized than it was, it is still in progress. Organization in this area will really streamline so much in our home. It always seems to be on the bottom of the priority list though. I do hope to finish up with it in the next week.
  • My bible reading is mostly consistant in the morning and has improved in the evening. I still desire to read my bible more and to have a greater love for it. The Lord and His Word are part of the focus of my tune-up challenge Loving My God, Loving My Man.
  • Last week was the first tune up in The Double Love Dare. We looked at patience and were challenged to say nothing negative. I am not a negative person, and while I am certainly well aware of the fact that I have not yet “arrived”, I think that generally I am a fairly good wife. Last week I was surprised at how many things I said (or thought) that were in some way critical or negative. I am happy to say that there were many times that I bit my tongue and prayed for help however the instances when I didn’t were too many for my liking! Still an area with a lot of room for improvement!
Tomorrow is the next Tune-Up Tuesday Challenge in Loving My God, Loving My Man. I hope you will join me.
If you want to give a tune-up report, link up to tomorrows post! Or of course, leave a comment!

Calling in Sick

Since my littles have been sick all weekend, I had great plans for pulling my house together today. They are both still sick and wailing in harmony. I know as mothers we need to put the needs of our family first, to be gentle, patient, loving and self-sacrificing. But this mommy is feeling a little crummy herself. I wish I could call in sick. I’m going to go ahead and say it – I am looking forward to nap time!

I am reading through Proverbs for March (31 days, 31 chapters) and have to say I am glad today is not the 31st as I am not in the right spirit for her!

Todays Ambitions: tidy up kitchen, wash a load of diapers, make a menu for the week and care for littles.

Status Note: The Lord heard my morning plea. As we were lying on the floor taking pictures and feeling down, the doorbell rang. There was my sister and three of her boys. Chloe (who was feeling the worst) perked right up. What a blessing to have her visit!!

Here is the project I am tackling right now as my littles nap:

What do you do with a sick baby and a two year old? Entertainment ideas? Encouraging words? A favorite scripture to cling to? Share away!

My mother and I were talking the other day because she had been eating almonds and actually bit her tongue. She said it really hurts (silly mommy!) I’ve actually bitten mine a few times in my life and it certainly wasn’t pleasant.

It got me thinking: I would be foolish to physically bite my tongue on purpose because I would hurt myself. But you know I can really hurt myself by NOT figuratively biting my tongue when I should. I can hurt and damage my character, reputation, testimony and relationships. “Biting our tongues” may not always be pleasant for us and at times it is down right hard but by God’s grace we can do it!

Wedding Bells!

My brother is one of those people who love life, love to travel and love adventure. I wasn’t sure he would ever get married but he fell in love and now he is starting the adventure of a lifetime in Australia!

Tonight at 10:00pm my time (here in ON, Canada), my baby brother will be getting married.

He and his fiancee worked out at a resort together in Alberta. He was from Ontario and she was from Australia. They fell in love, moved to Australia and are getting married!! How I wish that we could all be there with him! Then I could be in the wedding and wear a fabulous dress…ah well.

Maybe he’ll let me put a picture up after. Who doesn’t love to see a wedding picture?!?

Our Whole Gang!

Is there somewhere you’d like to go and it costs too much? Try buddying up!

My sister and I love the zoo! She has 5 littles and I have 2 so needless to say, it costs a lot it would be a special treat to go once a year. Many times a membership to somewhere is not that much more than the actual admission! We spoke to the membership office and explained that most of the time it would just be my sister, the littles and I, coming and could we qualify for a family membership? On our own, neither my sister or I could afford to buy a membership. Because they were nice enough to allow us to all join under one membership, as long as we each go 1 1/2 times a year, it pays for itself. They also have many membership benefits that we are able to take advantage of! Free things as well as discounts and coupons. On the rare occasion that we are there with our spouses, they have to pay full price but usually we are there during the week.

There are also some indoor playgrounds here in town. We don’t go a lot but we have been a couple times (in the winter). Check before you go because usually they have a group rate. One place we have been offered a $1 discount per child if you had over four children in your group.

If you are planning to visit anywhere that has a fee, always do an Internet search for a coupon or to see if they have any specials that you can get in on!

We used to being to the Art Gallery of Ontario in our pre-children days. Because we lived a certain distance from the gallery, they had a special rate for non-residents. Be sure to investigate this aspect as well.

If you are really frugal, then you probably only visit places that are free and this post won’t interest you in the least. To be honest, I mostly just wanted to post the cute pics I have from our zoo day last week 🙂

Aaron came with us in our van to keep Chloe and John company.
Chloe wondered if John might like some of her cheese (I’m sure he would lol)

Chloe spent a good amount of time trying to catch the geese. Good thing we have a membership for that 🙂 You can’t find Canada Geese just anywhere in Canada!

Dont‘ forget to visit Life As Mom for more fruagl tips!

Getting Teeth?

John has been a little fussy lately. He has also been waking up every 2 1/2 hours. I can’t remember a night that he slept longer than that. The other day he cried and cried. I gave him a little Motrin and a home-made melon Popsicle and *boom* he was happy as anything. Maybe he’s getting a little tooth pushing through. I haven’t felt anything yet but I think it’s on it’s way. A happy and sad moment. I’m happy that he is growing up the way God intended but I am sad that his toothless and dorky baby grin will all too soon disappear. Babies grow up so fast!

Tuesday morning, despite delays and extra spills at breakfast, we made it out to ladies bible study and were only a few minutes late. Hurray! When Jaiden walked in the door that morning I had to laugh since Chloe was wearing almost the same dress as she was. At bible study they asked if I planned it 🙂 Chloe loves her rubber boots so even if they don’t match the outfit, I indulge her. Don’t sweat the little things right?
